2008 South Dakota Science Olympiad State Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion. The registration deadline for the state tournament is Friday, February 22, 2008. Some important initial documents including: a brochure about Science Olympiad, the "formal" fall invitation letter, the state tournament membership/registration form, as well as the event correlation to the NSES can be found on the South Dakota Science Olympiad web page, (http://usd.edu/math/sdscioly/) as PDF files. Please feel free to download/print the previously mentioned documents from the web page. They are the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th red links on the left-hand side of the web page. There is a list of the 2008 Science Olympiad events on the membership/registration form. I will probably be receiving the coaches manuals and rules from the national office in the later part of September. If you have any other questions, then please feel free to ask me. Again, I hope to see each of you at the 2008 South Dakota Science Olympiad State Tournament. Have a nice day.

16th Annual
SDCTM/SDSTA
Joint Conference
February 7-9, 2008 in Huron

Plans are underway for the 16th Annual Math and Science Professional Development conference to be held in Huron.  Starting Thursday night at 7 PM there are sharing sessions, specific to both math & science areas.

Around the halls, you will find photos that are sponsored by the South Dakota Assn of Physics Teachers.  They are for a student contest of taking pictures and describing the PHYSICS in the photo.  You can cast your vote in this competition on either Thursday or Friday by placing your TWO CENTS into the container for photo that you feel is best.  You may either judge the photo or the description.  (That is, you may put as many pennies in as many containers as you wish.)  Final voting is completed in the afternoon sessions as the top vote getters are judged on both photo and description so that the overall top three will receive monetary prizes.

A schedule-at-a-glance can be found on the next two pages for Friday and Saturday sessions.  For full descriptions, you will have to go online and get the full conference booklet.  Right after Christmas Vacation, you should receive a brochure highlighting the conference that contains a registration form.

The Friday night banquet will feature Jearl Walker.  Jearl is a professor of physics at Cleveland State University, received his BS in physics from MIT in 1967 and his PhD in physics from University of Maryland in 1973. His book The Flying Circus of Physics was published 30 years ago and is still being sold world wide. During his 13 years with Scientific American magazine, he wrote 152 articles for "The Amateur Scientist" section. In 1990, he took over the textbook Fundamentals of Physics. He has been on TV and radio numerous times, but clearly remembers the 20 minutes he spent performing on the Johnny Carson show.
